POSTED ON: AUG. 10, 2015

Family Biz BuilderA new nonprofit in the Tunica area, Family Biz Builder, has a mission to help develop families (men, women, and children) both personally and professionally through both education and new experiences to help overcome historic poverty by creating entrepreneurial employment.  An activity that they promote is working in conjunction with Tunica National to teach youth the skills that need to play tennis and golf.  In addition, the youth and their families participate in classes to help them become successful both on and off the sports court or course.

9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

POSTED ON: AUG. 06, 2015

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under bipartisan federal law, and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with helping to support this effort across the country. Volunteer Northwest Mississippi is honoring this Day of Service by encouraging that events be held throughout northwest Mississippi.

Volunteer Northwest Mississippi has adopted Mid-South Project Package for the 2015 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Project Package is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization that sends weekly care packages to local mid-south servicemen. It is their way of letting them know that we have not forgotten them and that we appreciate their service. Each month, Project Package sends out approximately 450 packages to servicemen and women from the mid-south. These care packages include items like toothpaste, bug spray, sunscreen, tuna packets, sunflower seeds, snack cakes, and other snack foods and hygiene items. Most packages that they ship each month go to troops stationed in Afghanistan. Typically, Project Package receives names of servicemen from local National Guard units, friends, and other people in the community. If you have a service person that you would like to add to their list, please contact Rickey Pope at 662-284-8108 or

Throughout the month of August, in honor of their anniversary and in preparation for the 9/11 National Day of Service, various community partners will be collecting items for care packages and will be collecting monetary donations to cover the cost of postage for sending out the care packages each week. To view the list of care package items needed, click here.

Volunteers participating in the Hernando Scavenger Hunt will write appreciation cards for the packages at the VNM office. Approximately 100 people will participate in the scavenger hunt.

On Thursday, September 10, 2015, volunteers from various community partners will come together to package up the items they have been collecting. All volunteers will meet at the Southaven Armory, the home of Mid-South Project Package. Volunteers will work together to package up items and celebrate the work of Project Package. Local government officials will be invited to attend the Volunteer Rally and Packaging Event at the Armory.   Local television stations will be there to spotlight Project Package and the community partners supporting this organization.

If you or your business/group would like to participate in collecting items, fundraising, or working on 9/11 at the Southaven Armory, please contact Anna Dickerson at
