Monday, January 16, 2017 marks the 2nd Annual Dr. MLK, Jr. Prayer Breakfast, Memorial Walk and Day of Service, presented by North Mississippi Cultural Foundation in partnership with Volunteer Northwest Mississippi and the City of Olive Branch. This year’s event will be held at Olive Branch Intermediate School beginning @ 8:30 a.m. The school is located at 8631 Pigeon Roost Road in Olive Branch.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community.”

Guests at the January 16th event will have the opportunity to listen to a brief program on the Day of Service and how they can serve in our community during a prayer breakfast provided by Volunteer Northwest Mississippi. After the program, attendees will participate in a memorial walk in honor of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There will be a service project completed after the memorial walk that will benefit Mid-South Project Package, a non-profit, all volunteer organization committed to sending weekly care packages overseas to troops from the Mid-South. Each month Project Package sends out more than 800 packages to serviceman and women from the Mid-South. They receive names from churches, the National Guard office, and people in the community. Volunteers at the prayer breakfast will work to assemble care packages on site that morning.

The breakfast is free but registration is required and all guests are asked to please bring at least three (3) items from the Project Package supply list. The Supply list is:
