9/11 Day of Service a Success!
On Thursday, September 10th volunteers from throughout DeSoto County came together to support MidSouth Project Package, a local nonprofit committed to sending care packages to midsouth men and women currently serving overseas. This work was done in honor of 9/11 as part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance. When 9/11 was established as a Day of Service the idea was to encourage people to engage in charitable service on 9/11 as an annual and forward looking tribute to 9/11 victims, survivors, and those who rose up in service in response to the attack.
Volunteer Northwest Mississippi chose to honor the lives lost and forever changed on 9/11 by picking up the torch for Project Package. The work that they do is impressive given how much they rely on community donations. They operate with a $0 budget and all of the work done is by volunteers. All of the supplies sent are donated and all money used to cover the cost of shipping is donated. On average, Project Package sends 450 packages and it costs $11 to send each package. So events like this are what have helped Project Package to keep their doors open for 11 years.
Thank you to Mayor Darren Musselwhite of Southaven and County Supervisor Mark Gardner for coming and saying a few words. We sincerely appreciate the support of our local elected officials.
Rickey Pope and all of the volunteers at Project Package sincerely appreciate the outpouring of support and love that has been shown to them over the last month. They meet every Thursday at the Southaven Armory (385 Stateline Road, Suite 2, Southaven) from 4:00-7:00pm to assemble care packages and I know they would love to have your help.
